Tire Rotation | Tire Maintenance

The Skinny on Tire Rotation in Port St. Lucie

The mild sunny weather in South Florida is often perfect for long drives in your car with the top down. Who doesn’t enjoy a long drive on an endless highway with the warm summer breeze flowing through your hair? Most South Florida roads are also in relatively good shape so you can ride for hundreds of miles without hitting a bump or potholes. However, there is a limit to how long you can ride comfortably on your tires without worrying that they may go bald, lose air, or need of rotation. The importance of tire rotation is crucial to consider when examining your tires for wear and tear.  Today’s tires have become so trouble-free that you may not think too much about them until you are faced with an issue. Among the critical steps often ignored is tire rotation.

The importance of tire rotation

One of the most important things to consider when considering your car’s health is to get a regular tire rotation. Like anything else, taking care of your vehicle will ultimately prolong its life so you can enjoy it for many years to come. Rotation ensures that your tire will wear evenly. Rotating the front tires to the rear and the rear tires to the front prevent uneven wear which, if not kept in check, will eventually take a toll on the life of your vehicle. Regular tire rotation can increase performance and provide a smoother more stable ride. It can also save you money in the long run on gas and maintenance since your engine will be running more efficiently. It’s important to note that there may be multiple rotation patterns for your particular vehicle. Your serviceman should follow the pattern outlined in your owner’s manual.  But your tires should typically be rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Again, checking your owner’s manual will indicate the correct mileage for rotation of your tires.

The importance of tread direction

The tread grip of your vehicle is important because it can indicate that you are in need of new tires or a tire rotation. A tread pattern is a unique design that enhances a vehicle with grip and handling for specific driving conditions. Some tires have a specific direction of rotation in order to improve how the car handles on turns, wet roads, and noise reduction. There are three types of tread direction which will depend on your specific vehicle. They are:

  • Asymmetrical tread pattern

Tires with asymmetric tread patterns do not have a specific direction of rotation; however, the word “Outside” is often indicated on one side of the tire and should be mounted facing outward.

  • Symmetrical tread pattern

On standard tires with symmetrical tread patterns, it does not matter which way the tire is fitted on the rim or which position it is fitted on your car.

  • Direction tread pattern

For tires with directional tread patterns, an arrow on the side of the tire indicates the direction of rotation. This side of the tire must be on the outside, and the tire must roll forwards in the direction of the arrow for optimal tire performance.
